Redditors on Writing The Takeaways

It is nearly impossible for a writer to exist in a vacuum. We all need the support, encouragement and especially the advice of other writers. It doesn’t matter if you are seeking tips on how to write an essay for college, ways to improve your sales copy, or insight for developing characters in a novel. We all have something to learn from our fellow composers. What Do Redditors Have To Do With It?Perhaps you yourself are a Redditor – an obsessive fan of Reddit.com. If so, you understand the site is a wealth of information and insight. Therefore, it probably isn’t surprising we’ve managed to compose an entire article filled with your witty repartee. If, however, you aren’t a regular at Reddit.com, you are probably questioning our reasoning. After all, it’s sometimes said a Redditor â€Å"possesses an inflated sense of self-importance.†In most situations, the tendency to spout out opinions on nearly everything under the sun is a bit o bnoxious. However, in some instances, it can also be helpful. And fortunately, we’ve found one of those helpful situations! One particular Redditor (GetYourAlbatros) started a conversation that is actually quite helpful. This Redditor posed the question: â€Å"What is your number one tip or trick for better writing?†This extremely popular thread shed light on a very helpful topic. There are plenty of websites, books and even inspirational quotes from the literary masters who supposedly offer tips for writers. While these things are often helpful, the information is sometimes hard to relate to.After all, it’s challenging trying to emulate a famous author who simply needs to churn out a half-hearted attempt at a blog post or book and instantly secures an obsessive fanbase. Following in the footsteps of a starving artist who is still in the trenches, trying to combat writer’s block on a daily basis is easier to relate to.So, let’s hear what the R edditors have to say!â€Å"Don’t be afraid to write shitty. Assume it will always be shitty until the end.†This is perhaps one of the best pieces of advice when it comes to battling the blank page. If you expect sensational material to flow magically from your brain to your computer screen, you’ll never get anywhere.Another Redditor added: â€Å"Get the ideas on the page before you lose them.† Don’t correct spelling errors. Don’t worry about proper punctuation. Don’t stop to research a point. Just write. You can edit later.C. J. Cherryh said, â€Å"It is perfectly ok to write garbage – as long as you edit brilliantly.† Once you have all your thoughts down, go back and edit. And edit again.â€Å"Always start a new sentence or paragraph before you stop writing for the day so that when you come back, you have somewhere to pick up from again†If a single composition spans several writing sessions, it is a fact o f life that most of the time will be spent reviewing what you’ve already written. There is a chance that just as much time can be wasted trying to determine where you’ll go next.Combat both of these issues by leaving yourself a little inspiration. Maybe you jot down the opening sentence to the next paragraph. Maybe you quickly compose all the upcoming subheadings. Maybe you leave yourself a short and direct list of bullet points, outlining where your thoughts are headed.E. L. Doctorow said, â€Å"Writing†¦is like driving a car at night. You can only see as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.†Ã¢â‚¬Å"Disconnect from the internet.†For me, as a blogger of the company that provides essay writing service, this is probably one of the most difficult tips to follow – yet it is probably the most helpful. Another Redditor commented, â€Å"My output increased by roughly 300% when I started writing in a cafà © without W iFi.Until it’s gone, you won’t notice how much time you really waste on the internet. Sure, you know the time spent Facebook stalking or Reddit obsessing is pointless, but you won’t know just how many hours you waste until you disconnect.Having the internet in the background is just too tempting. You might jump online quick to research a fact. While you’re there, you check your email. Someone sent you a link to an article. You must read it. Now, you need to log on to all your social media accounts and share it with the masses. While you’re there, you’ll want to catch up on the latest gossip. And what happened to your writing project? What writing project?!Just remove the temptation. Turn the WiFi off. Go somewhere where the internet isn’t available. Heck, use paper and a pen if you must!â€Å"Learn to kill an idea.†For most of us, writing is our passion. We often feel we are bleeding as we type. That’s why it is difficult to edit. No one wants to think a single word is unworthy. But to be successful, you must learn to kill an idea – no matter how attached you are to it. Another Redditor commented, Good ideas usually don’t take long to flesh out. Bad ideas suck hours from my productivity.†Stephen King added, â€Å"When your story is ready for rewrite, cut it to the bone. Get rid of every ounce of excess fat. This is going to hurt; revising a story down to the bare essentials is always a little like murdering children, but it must be done.†Ã¢â‚¬Å"If you have inspiration, do not stop writing until it runs out. This is when your absolute best stuff is going to flow, so letting an arbitrary thing stop you will only impede your progress.†Work schedules are great. They can force you to be productive when you are absolutely certain nothing of worth can flow from your brain. Most writers recommend establishing a writing schedule. Tell yourself you are going to write for a certain length of time at a designated hour each day. If you don’t do this, there is a very good chance you’ll never get around to it.However, writing schedules can be very limiting too – if you let them. When writing is a struggle and thoughts aren’t flowing naturally, having a cut-off time will ensure you don’t give up prematurely. But if the good stuff is flowing, don’t stop! Don’t close up shop just because the clock chimes a certain number of times or because your favorite TV show is about to start.William Faulkner said, â€Å"Get it down. Take chances. It may be bad, but it’s the only way you can do anything really good.† Get it down – no matter what else might be going on around you.Hopefully, you’ve made it this far and the fact we suggest you take advice from Redditors didn’t offend you too much. In a worst case scenario, you can just pretend we got the above tips from a n anonymous source. After all, according to Ernest Hemmingway, â€Å"it’s none of their business that you have to learn to write. Let them think you were born that way.†Now, how about you pass the torch, share the love, follow in the footsteps of others. Share your best writing hacks in the comment section below.

Deceit in Hunters in the Snow Essay Example

Deceit in Hunters in the Snow Essay Example Deceit in Hunters in the Snow Essay Deceit in Hunters in the Snow Essay Tobias Wolff’s Hunters in the Snow centres on the actions and personalities of Kenny. Frank and Tub as they embark on a hunting trip during the winter. Each character faces jobs ( in character or otherwise ) which they attempt to cover up through misrepresentation – the cardinal subject in this short narrative – in order to accept their several actions. The effects of these screen ups deeply change the power of each character over another. Furthermore. the characters don’t recognize how their prevarications influence others around them. Kenny is a quintessential bully. His demand for power over the other two causes him to asseverate control of any action be it driving or inquiring for permission to run on private evidences. In truth. he doesn’t even wish to inquire for permission but is pressured by Frank to make so. Kenny’s apparently light-minded idiosyncrasies besides follow from his desire to be the alpha-male. He insults and pitilessly annoyers Frank and Tub about their insecurities. He pretends to want to run over Tub after looking an hr late and instantly silences any expostulation from Tub. However. he neither realizes how far he is forcing Tub nor the hazard he is in. His stupid actions taking up to and after the slaying of the old Canis familiaris eventually push Tub. who lawfully fears for his life. to revenge. This instantly puts Kenny’s life at the custodies of his tough victims and leaves a power vacuity to be filled. Tub’s chief job is his denial of the hapless eating wonts that he has. He adamantly tries to convert others that his job is due to his glans despite acutely cognizing that he gorges himself on unhealthy nutrients in purdah. The insecurity he feels about being found out causes him to go easy manipulated and bullied by Frank and Kenny. Furthermore. the revenge against Kenny merely adds to the insecurity Tub has and he instantly searches for blessing and protection against the effect of hiting Kenny. Frank fills in this vacuity and manipulates Tub into siding with him. Frank himself faces the issue of criminal conversation. His lecherousness for another adult female causes him to lead on himself into believing that this new female is the love of his life despite a little portion of his scruples saying otherwise. He even goes every bit far as to perverse the beliefs of that little portion by asseverating that his reluctance is merely due to the good that his married woman had done him and the childs they had. Frank’s self-deceit unwittingly acts on Tub’s insecurities. motivating Tub to open up about his jobs to Frank. By lead oning himself to accept his criminal conversation. Frank pushes Tub to accept the feeding jobs that Tub has by giving in to Tub’s impulses. Frank is incognizant that his credence of criminal conversation has already influenced Tub to yield to Tub’s desires ( shown by the fact that Tub decides to open up to Frank ) . Each character has major issues that need to be corrected but prefer to lead on themselves and others than accept the truth and work towards rectification. As such. Kenny lies in mortal hazard. Frank additions newfound power in the group and over Tub. and Tub remains submissive to Frank’s wants. Furthermore. the newfound assurance in Frank leads him to disregard common sense in traveling back to recover critical waies to the infirmary. The hereafters of these three characters is left hanging. nevertheless it is clear that the stoping has each one traveling down separate and erroneous waies.

Field trip report Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Field trip report - Essay Example The report applies Butler’s destination life-cycle model to the Piney Lake. The site has undergone the first two stages in the life-cycle- exploration and involvement. The tourist destination is heading towards its third stage-that of development. It seems that the Noongar community may take a long time to go through the other stages of tourism life cycle as the inhabitants are so much involved and tied to their indigenous culture and traditions. The current report emphasises the need to formulate comprehensive strategies to keep the Aboriginal culture and traditions of Noongar community intact. Researchers, students and scholars on indigenous tourism need to undertake detailed in-depth studies on the tourist destination to identify the factors that preserve its authenticity and cultural diversity. Governmental policies and interventions on indigenous tourism need to perceive tourism as a cultural phenomenon rather than an economic enterprise. It is imperative for all the stakeholders to identify the dangers of commoditization and commercialization. Above all, measures are to be undertaken to facilitate sustainable models of tourism development on the tourist site. Indigenous tourism in Australia is flourishing day by day as aboriginal owned and operated enterprises have been attracting the attention of tourists. Indigenous tourism paves way for cultural rejuvenation of aboriginals while it also contributes immensely to the economy of the nation. Authenticity lies at the core of indigenous tourism and therefore loss of authenticity due to commoditization and commercialization of indigenous culture deserve primary attention. Contrived cultural products, tourist oriented commercial craftworks, and commercialized tourist services may adversely affect tourists’ quest for authenticity and will negate them of genuine indigenous tourism experiences. Similarly, sustainable models of tourism development are an essential prerequisite for

Chiquita Brands Inc Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Chiquita Brands Inc - Research Paper Example Corporate Ethics The strategy for business ethics in Chiquita Brands was begun in 1998 when the company engaged the professional services of SmithOBrien to craft and implement a CSR policy for the company. The first comprehensive CSR report was released in 2004. (SmithOBrien website). Chiquita Brands’ corporate commitment speaks of the corporate values of integrity, respect, opportunity and responsibility as the embodiment of what they are and what they do. The company defines integrity as ethical and lawful business communicated in an open and straightforward manner (Kotler and Lee, 2005). Respect is seen as fair and respectable treatment of people. They recognize that the growth and development of their employees is the key to the company’s success. They take pride in their services and make sure that these exceed customer expectations. As much as they uphold the primacy of their customers, they recognize that their accountability is to all stakeholders, including emp loyees, suppliers, shareholders, communities and the world. (Chiquita website). At Chiquita Brands, corporate social responsibility is an integral part of their global business strategy. They make it a point to live up to the requirements of SA 8000, one of the more credible and verifiable social accountability standards (developed by Social Accountability International), by regularly including the SAI assessment in their corporate responsibility reports. Their openness on issues about their social, environmental and financial performance is highlighted in these reports. (Chiquita website). As part of their pursuit of these corporate commitments, Chiquita Brands has implemented an anti-retaliation policy to encourage the reporting or raising of concerns about potential misconduct and other ethical issues. This policy is available in six key languages to make sure it is understood by employees, contractors and vendors in most Chiquita locations. (Chiquita website). CSR Issues Involvi ng Chiquita Brands Notwithstanding the implementation of a corporate responsibility policy sometime after 1998, a number of violations or infringements resembling CSR violations have been reported and documented involving Chiquita Brands. On of these was the conviction of Chiquita Brands in 2007 by a US court of illegal financial dealing with Colombian terrorists in the form of â€Å"protection money† during the period 2001-2004. $25 Million Fine The court slapped a fine of $25 Million and five-year probation, and was required to hire a permanent compliance officer. Under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, the fine would have been almost $100 Million, but the court rendered a much lesser penalty in consideration of Chiquita’s self-disclosure and full cooperation (Annual Report 2010). The situation in Colombia is atypical of businesses engaged in landed estates for their production, as in banana production. Where the country is under-developed and the econ omy is struggling, this would have been an ideal location to operate a wide-area plantation because of the low cost of agricultural work (Vellema, 1999). Protection Money Most such areas, however, are characterized by the presence of insurgents who are also members of the local community and who feed on instigating for peasant rights, as in Panama and the Philippines (Vellema, 1999). There is no way an organization

Factors affecting the success of localization strategy of fast food Literature review

Factors affecting the success of localization strategy of fast food companies in Asian countries - Literature review Example Integrating national economy to the global economy calls for sustainable developmental approaches through efficient use of local resources with the underlying cause of welfare to the society with environment friendly processes. According to Bruntland report  Ã¢â‚¬Å"Development that meets the  needs  of the present without compromising the  ability  of future generations to meet their own needs† is called as sustainable development (Business Dictionary.com). This paper seeks to study and analyze the issue with reference to the following questions: 1. Why localization strategy is important for fast food industry in Asian countries?   2. How to use the localization strategy for fast food industry in Asian countries?   3. What are the key factors affecting the success of localization strategy of fast food companies in Asian countries?   Localization strategy in Asian countries Asian markets are highly heterogeneous in nature, especially in the case of food industry with different ethnic groups, languages, vast cultural differences and divergent climatic conditions. The religious mix varies from region to region with a very long history. Food security and alleviation of poverty are the major concerns for the most of the Asian countries which are heavily populated compared to European or American countries. The government policies are oriented towards building a sustainable food economy. Therefore, a successful localization strategy for a sustainable growth has to be in line with the basic objectives of the State taking into account the income levels, local spending choices, nutrition and health, rural bias of the economy, urbanization process at various stages in different countries, employment generation, educational and technological developments of the regions, the use of agricultural lands, climatic conditions, efficient utilization of natural resources and its environmental impact. Business Monitor International (2011, p. 6) states â€Å" Health and hygiene scares continue to be a major concern in China’s food industry, with the government implementing crackdowns on chemical additives in food products†. Adoption of the best industrial and commercial practices by the fast food companies is essential for the desired effect in reshaping the food system and food habits in the communities. Localization efforts go beyond menus and the organization needs to integrate itself with the cultural mainstream of the host country to strike a chord with the consumers. Lee, M. et al (2011) state, â€Å"Yum’s cultural flexibility doesn’t end with the localized menu. While fast-food restaurants in the West often host kids’ birthday parties, KFCs in Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang autonomous region that’s home to the Muslim Uyghur people, advertise parties for the families of boys who have just undergone the religious ritual of circumcision†.   The Asian markets hold potential for growth in future on account of growing population which provides a huge market coupled with high growth in economy over the period of time in the past which is expected to continue in future. Davies, R. (1996, p. 2) states â€Å"The interest in Asian management is primarily a recent phenomenon, facilitated by the growth in Asian markets within the global economy, and a realization in the West that Asia is both a region that will be central to any serious global business, and also a region that can offer the West much wisdom in management techniques†. The subsequent developments in the continent have justified this

Discussion on Poverty in South Africa

Discussion on Poverty in South Africa Discussion on Poverty and the current situation in South Africa South Africa has a population of 47.9 million people (http://www.southafrica.info/about/people/popprov.htm) the largest provincial province in South Africa is Kwa-Zulu Natal with 10 million people that is 20.9%. Gauteng is the most densely populated province in South Africa which consists of 9.6 million people. Gauteng is not the biggest province but because of the demand for work and income many people vacate their countries to find work in South Africa, people come from all over such as Botswana, Mozambique and most of all Zimbabwe. Many of these people come to Gauteng because of the working and living conditions in these countries are terrible and people cannot get jobs to afford to pay for their families. This does create and cause a lot of the poverty because not all foreigners can find the work and so then they have no way of leaving because they illegally live there, hence the Xenophobic attacks. Poverty in South Africa has lead to many problems in South Africa such as lack of skills, crime and education. Capital is what revolves around these socio-economic issues, because of the demand for capital people with a lack of skills cannot afford school and so they have no education. People have no money without a job and so they have to get capital, this is where stealing comes in and so the only way to obtain capital is to steal, this is why South Africas crime rate is so high because it is poverty stricken. South Africas population is dominated by Africans consisting of 78% in of the total population growing at 7% from 2001 to 2006. The remainder of the population is split as follows, Coloured 8% of the population growing at 5.77%, Indian 2% of the population growing at 4.18% and white 11% of the population growing at 0.43%. (Population chart Ref South Africa Survey 2004 Institute of Race Relations)- refer to chart 1 and 2-population How Tiger Brands deals with poverty Tiger Brands is one of the leading packing businesses in the country. Listed on the JSE. As a large company Tiger Brands has to deal with many CSR related problems, one of their main focuses is poverty, because of their packaging they deal with a lot of food packaging. Tiger Brands have specifically looked at the feeding poverty stricken areas with many children in it. This is the starting point at helping the poverty in South Africa. Tiger has established a feeding and education program that has 17 township committees, 12 mothers clubs, 13 feeding centres and five mobile vans and a number of other methods that deliver food to the poverty stricken areas. I believe this helps poverty stricken people because obtaining food in an everyday struggle and so by addressing one of their main needs does help them a lot and also ables them to survive through the food provided by Tiger. This project is also sustainable because there is another short term program that is linked to the feeding which is an educational program that will ensure that the people in the area receive education that will allow them to be employed in the future and provide the country with valuable human capital, with the education and feeding programs Tiger Brands addresses 2 of the main corporate social issues, by addressing health they will be able maintain good levels of nutrition and so people will live healthy and so stealing should cut down because of a lesser demand of capital to purchase food, if other companies did this of course. Poverty in South Africa is too high, many major events will be held in the year of 2010 in South Africa such as the FIFA World Cup Soccer Tournament many people will be travelling from overseas to come and watch this prestigious event and so foreign capital will be coming to the country. Crime rates could affect this and so eradicating poverty could help by lowering the crime rate. If South Africa is seen as a stable place for investment after the world cup, the country can start to see new light with new infrastructure, more capital to aid problems in South Africa, so it is key to portray the country as one that is stable. Population according to race-Chart Chart 2 population Race 2001 2006 Increase % of pop 2001 % of pop 2006 African 35185 040 37648 310 7.00% 78% 78% Coloured 3808 770 4028 360 5.77% 8% 8% Indian 1113 210 1159 720 4.18% 2% 2% White 5242 500 5265 030 0.43% 12% 11% Total 45351 521 48103 426 6.07% 100% 100% As a result of poverty and people not being able to live are forced to find new ways in obtaining other sources of food and income. One of the most common ways in obtaining these things is stealing. (Crime Chart Ref South Africa Survey 2004 Institute of Race Relations). Stealing is related to crime in South Africa and I believe crime is linked to poverty because people have no money to afford a house or food and so they have no way in obtaining basic needs and so they resort to stealing from people in cars, from peoples homes. I believe if we reduce poverty within South Africa we can solve crime because less pressure if found on people to support their families through illegal ways. Choice of company Discussion on choice of company My choice in companies was Tiger Brands, a local company that supplies with a wide variety food stuffs including basic nutrition such as bread, maize as well as canned foods. As Tiger are a local company and have a vested interest and social issues in South Africa their employment policy is directed at the local population because they have a true understanding of some of the problems that Tiger Brands faces. Listed below are some of the areas the compete in Domestic food Consumer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals Hospital Products Fishing Exports of goods Tiger Brands can be seen on many items in South Africa such as Energade, tomato sauce and bread. I chose Tiger Brands because they are a multinational company, that operates mainly in South Africa and other emerging markets (http://www.tigerbrands.co.za/Default.htm) Tiger Brands mission statement is â€Å"to be the worlds most admired branded consumer packed Goods Company in emerging markets†. http://www.tigerbrands.co.za/Default.htm I believe this is a very attainable goal for Tiger Brands because they are renound for good services and quality. Tiger Brands have been involved in a number of scams such as when they increased the price for bread; this would be the only thing stopping them to reach their mission statement because of their reputation. One of my main influences of choosing this company was because my father has dealt with Tiger Brands before and has background information on it, so information was viable. Tiger Brands have many advantages and disadvantages for their company which either help to enhance the performance of the company or bring it down, Tiger Brands works on all of their disadvantages because this brings down their name such as the price of bread going up and so they try to better their image after that incident through CSR projects and helping out the public. Advantages Disadvantages * Large company = many investors so they can grow to reach their mission statement * Bread price raising crisis that brought down their reputation. * They have companies in emerging markets and so they have a broader capital intake. * * They have CSR projects which enhances a positive image in the eyes of the public. 2010 Vision, Mission, Strategy and Capabilities for Tiger Brands (www.tigrbrands/2010vision.co.za) Vision To be the worlds most admired branded consumer packaged goods and healthcare company in emerging markets Mission Increase turnover to R30 billion and grow EBIT margin to 20% by 2010 Strategy We will achieve sustainable and profitable top line growth by: Transforming the organisation Optimising our business portfolio Pursuing growth Organic Exports African expansion Acquisitions in selected markets Capabilities Ability to attract, retain and develop the best people A reputation for innovation Excellence in brand building and customer and channel management Continuous improvement Value creation for all our stakeholders in an environment of respect, teamwork, imagination and action-orientation. Summary of different CSR projects for chosen company (Immediate needs education) â€Å"Love thy neighbour† Ubuntu campaign, which helps mitigate the socio-economic effects of HIV/AIDS through education and training and entrenches the extended family Ubuntu culture through peer education. The information offered covers a number of topics such as counselling, communication skills, teenage, HIV/AIDS and the use of ARVs. Heartbeat Heartbeat supports orphaned and vulnerable children by ensuring that their basic needs are taken, care of to ensure they can finish their schooling and live their lives as children. In 6 years since inception, Heartbeat has successfully partnered projects in 7 provinces, collectively meeting the needs of 5000 orphaned and vulnerable children. Heartbeat has developed five programs which contribute to the holistic transformation of the child and consist of different products and services. Unite 4 Health Following on from the success of Unite against Hunger, Tiger Brands healthcare company, Adock Ingram launched Unite 4 health in Jan 2006, aimed at supporting efforts to improve healthcare for disadvantaged South Africans. As with its Unite against Hunger initiatives, Tiger Brands aims to ensure the sustainability of Unite 4 health projects by providing funding and supporting infrastructural development that will serve beneficiaries in the long term. Red Cross Childrens Hospital In June 2005, Unite 4 Health agreed to donate R4 million to the Red Cross War Memorial Childrens Hospital in Cape Town. This Hospital is the only specialist centre dedicated to treating children on the African Continent. At the hospital, Africa- specific research on childrens diseases and HIV/AIDS not only improves the health of the little patients, but also assists in training doctors and nurses. Soweto Hospice The unite 4 healths funding for the Hospice contributed towards the provision of a 24 new bed womans ward and state-of-the-art facilities to support the large team of professional nurses and volunteers who care for 450 people Soweto Hospice is now a vital community resource tackling HIV/AIDS complications and various psychosocial issues. Heart of Soweto Unite 4 Health committed R2 million in support of a study which aims to track the incidence of cardiovascular disease in a developing world scenario. This study, the first one of its kind in Africa is led by Prof. Karen Silwa- head of the Soweto cardiovascular research unit at Chris Hani Baragwaneth Hospital- in collaboration with experts from Australia and the United Kingdom. The Heart of Soweto study has initiated the important task of better understanding and monitoring of the emergence of heart disease in the Soweto population. Its significance lies in tracking the incidence of a disease often associated with increasingly affluent lifestyles in one of South Africas largest urban areas. The environmental control system Tiger Brands recognizes that some of its activities and operations may have a negative environmental impact and to this end, an Environmental Control System has been implemented throughout the group to facilitate good environmental management and to ensure compliance with South African national , Provincial and local regulations. Environmental management is driven by the group safety, Health and Environment policy which commit all operations to follow best practice standards and to seek continuous improvement in Safety, health and environmental management. Discussion of a specific issue that the company concentrates on Poverty Hunger As we have read from the above articles Tiger Brands deals with many problems in society and we have learnt with each action they take another is re-acted. South Africa is overwhelmed with starving children, mothers, fathers and people who have shacks for houses if not nothing for a shelter. These are key areas that need attention from the public to help re-enforce their infrastructure and living conditions. South Africa is a Third World country because of the high percentage of people living in no homes and people running short of capital to purchase food, this is why there is a lot of crime because people have no way of obtaining their primary needs such as food, water, electricity and so people resort to stealing. (Immediate needs living conditions) Hunger and poverty continue to be a reflection of the bigger socio-economic challenges that South Africa still faces. Most of our people do not have access to sufficient nutrition or basic healthcare. They the most comprehensive array of food and healthcare brands and products that play a huge role in the lives of our citizens. As a good corporate citizen, our objective is to find ways in which to give back to the communities and our country as a whole.25% of available funds to be used in rural huger and health initiatives. Poverty in South Africa can be seen almost everywhere. Every stop street, robot we see people begging because they have no money and they need food and need a shelter for their families. In South Africa we have many informal settlements such as Diepsloot, Alexander, and Soweto, where many shacks are built and small businesses such as kiosks.   Malnutrition graph 3 urban Formal urban Informal Urban Commercial Farms Rural Tribal National Low height for age 17% 19% 19% 31% 27% 25% 22.0% Low weight for age 8% 8% 8% 13% 13% 11% 10% Low weight for height 3% 3% 2% 4% 5% 5% 4% (Malnutrition institute of race relations South African Survey 2004) Fighting off Hunger and poverty increases the positive image Tiger Brands strives for because its such a big issue in the community. The Project I have chosen is the ACFS. Tiger Brands whole CSR project revolve around this one and it has many links with different CSR projects they have. This Project is called the African Childrens Feeding Scheme. African Childrens feeding Scheme (ACFS) For over 60 years, the ACFS Community Education and feeding project has made a difference n the lives of poverty stricken children by combating malnutrition through feeding and education. The ACFS has 17 township committees, 12 mothers clubs, 13 feeding centres, 5 mobile vans and 6 tricycles that deliver food. Its activities are conducted through several interrelated projects: Its activities are conducted through several interrelated projects: Feeding the malnourished, needy and HIV/Aids affected and infected. The focus is predominantly on children and the project feeds 18 000 children daily and 1 000 families each month. As each family has an average of 7 to 9 people, this means about 8 000 people receive nutritious food parcels every month. â€Å"Love Thy Neighbour† Ubuntu campaign, which helps mitigate the socio-economic effects of HIV/ Aids through education and training and entrenches the extended family Ubuntu culture through peer education. â€Å"Care for Children† Programme, which supports orphans and vulnerable children, particularly child-headed households. Tiger Brands supports ACFS through regular donations of food, which when translated into monetary value over the past 13 months is over R1, 7 million. Many projects such as Earth Charter have been implemented in the world to enforce sustainability concerning natural resources, capital and human resources. Sustainability is about saving something for the future and then using it again in a natural resource case, in human resource raising a person in a business environment and teaching him the ways of your business is part of CSR and sustainability. St Stithians Boys College does do this with some of their staff, they do this by paying for his accommodation at the school, and the school pays for his studies. Once the employee has completed his work he will then in return work for the school e.g. Cricket Coach etc. Sustainability falls into two categories, Conservation and preservation of natural resources. (Geography for all grade 11 learners book) Sustainable Development- this is one of the ways that people are trying to balance human development with conserving the environment. Sustainable development is defined as ‘development that meets the needs of the present generation without undermining the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This means that before we begin any new development, we need to make sure it will not prevent our childrens generation from meeting their needs. For example, when we cut down trees for wood, we need to make sure we leave tress to grow for future generations to use. Ideally we plant one new tree for each one we cut down. (Life sciences for all grade 11 learners book) www.google/sustainability/images-spheres.co.za Sustainability has 3 sectors, Environmental, Economic and social the environmental is the natural resources and how you should manage the it, the economic environment is about Profit and cost savings and the social environment is about the standard of living and its about the community. The diagram above shows us how all 3 sectors are integrated. Sustainability of CSR Project (ACFS) I believe that the ACFS Project is sustainable. By helping out people in need of their main needs they can do this for their whole lives, as soon as they grow up they could join Tiger Brands and do what others did to them in the past. Through experience these people will know how and what to do and deal with because they were helped. South Africa has a very low literacy rate and many people are not educated this is a problem because this does cause poverty because people cannot get a job without an education and so an education is very important. Tiger Brands does deal with this in the ACFS project. Highest level of education table. No schooling Some Primary Completed Primary Some Secondary Completed Secondary Higher African 22.3% 18.5% 6.9% 30.4% 16.8% 5.2% Coloured 8.3% 18.4% 9.8% 40.1% 18.5% 4.9% Indian 5.3% 7.7% 4.2% 33.0% 34.9% 14.9% White 1.4% 1.2% 0.8% 25.0% 40.9% 29.8% Total 18% 16% 6% 31% 20% 8% (Education Institute of Race Relations South African Survey 2004) As we can see from the chart, education needs to be looked into because of such high rates of highest level education. South Africa has many unemployed people because of a lack of education. Tiger Brands has set up small schools and day care services to help the literacy rate. Private Schools are very expensive and so many children cannot afford to go to top schools. This is where you can find top quality education. Once education and hunger are being resolved people can start to prepare for other things in life such as saving capital for work and other things and then the unemployment rate should go down. Conclusion-All in all I think Tiger Brands main CSR Project is good and sustainable because people can come back and work for them. They have something good going on and they are making a difference in the community which CSR is all about and they are giving back to the community. Tiger Brands have addressed the serious problems in South Africa and have made a difference. South Africa has many problems that need to be solved in order to become a third world country which South Africa hopes to obtain and achieve. Happy Ending

No guts no glory. No pain no gain. Those are my life mottos. I feel that nothing can be achieved by simply sitting and doing absolutely nothing to make dreams come true. Life can be so hard especially when you are not born with silver spoon in yuor mouth. It is also the time when true friends are hard to comeby just because you do not much money to treat them at Kentucky Fried Chicken or Burger King. That is something that I have experienced ever since my family moves to this metropilitan city and I study in the new school. In my new school I study hard to complete with all my fellow classmates who come from all walks of life but most are from rich background. They have all that I have ever wanted in my life but fail to get. They can buy branded shoes and clothes, unlike my worn out Bata. They afford the latest handphones brands with the latest technology but me? There is nothing I could do to be on par with them. So, I just let them show off their fancy gadgets without feeling remors e with the fact that I am only an ordinary student coming from a family clerk. I just feel sad that they act as if I do not have feelings.I do not feel the least discourage since I know that I can also be like them one day if I work hard enough to score in my SPM exam. Day after day, night after night, I do not to do anything else but concentrate on my studies. Spm examination is just around the corner and I have no other wish apart from wanting to pass Spm with Flying colours. My parents are my inspirations. They always remind me to work hard and hange our fate, make them proud as well as prove to everybody that a son of a plain clerk can also succeed in life and deserve some respect. At times, I feel so stressed out that I almost give up and cry. Nevertheless, thinking of my parent's hope and wishes, I would never surrender and that is my final decision. I engage myseld in group discussion, have consultations with my Physics and Chemistry teachers, the two subjects that I am weak a t as well as burn as much midnight oil as possible to atain my ultimate goal-10A+ in the exam. Sometimes, I feel overworked myself but I know I have to muster every single once of my strength to pull through this ordeal and pray that it will end soon. The most awaited moment has arrived. With prayers and good luck wishes from my father and mother, I step into my examination hall with full awareness that I have to do really well in the exam to realize all my parent's dreams and mine. The torturous moments last for three weeks and as far as I am concerned time really flies but I trust myself that I have given my very best for each paper. March 2013 comes I heard on the television that the SPM result will be out today. With anticipation and nervousness I walk to school with my good friend Samah.I cannot imagine getting less than 8A+ because according to my conselor, only getting 8A+ will I be able to secure any scholarship, something which is very important to me due to my parent's inca pability to pay for my tertiary education. The moment Ms. Asiah, my form teacher hands me the result slip, my heart skips a bea. i am cold from feet to toe from the suspense. Then the moment arrives! It is the most unforgettable time of my life. I mange to get 10A+ and my prayer has been answered. Thank God for giving me apportunity to succeed and make my parents proud. That is the reward for my patience and harwork.

Elie Wiesel’s “Night”- Journal Entry Essay

Luck is on Wiesel’s Side†I am too old, my son,† he answered. â€Å"Too old to start a new life. Too old to start from scratch in some distant land†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (9)This scene where Elie’s father rejects his son’s request to liquidate everything and flee from the place where the extermination of Jews may occur, reminds me of a vivid conversation I once engaged in, with my two former North Korean grandparents. The Korean War (1950-53) and the Holocaust (1938-45) are in most aspects different, however, there is a heartbreaking similarity existing between the two incidents. That is, the pain of the victims gained from the separation of the family. While reading this novel Night, for several times we questioned the reason why the Jews , despite hearing the Nazi plans of annihilating the entire population dispersed throughout nations, didn’t take chance to flee from the town. As we discussed in class, primarily, the Jews were skeptical that such inhumane incident would take place in the world, until they underwent the incredible agonies both physically and mentally. Secondly, the Jews simply were unable to find some place to leave for. Sure enough, they were unwilling to become homeless even under adverse conditions of life under the hands of the SS officers. (which they didn’t expect to be the holocaust)The first reason pointed above also applies to the families during the Korean War. Subsequent to the outbreak of war, young, strong men were forced to join the army in North Korea. This meant to my North Korean grandfather in his 30s, fighting against the South Koreans was a patriotic obligation. However, he refused to fight, or support the government, and along the group of crowd he realized that the only way of escaping from the ordeal was to abandon his home and flee to the South. Of course, he strongly urged his parents to come along with him. Nevertheless, they responded him by emphasizing him of their old age and their strong will to ensure the safety of the house until the war ends. In spite of my grandfather’s further persuasion, they remained stubborn, and he could do nothing but to leave his parents behind and depart to a distant land. In the novel, I was indeed glad when the Wiesel family encounters their  former maid Maria in Uncle Mendel’s house, Elie refuses her offer of safe shelter in her village. Sure enough, if Elie and his brother went off with her, they might have avoided the terrifying labor camps where their livelihoods were jeopardized. However, I feel that wouldn’t be worse than the guilt of deserting one’s own blood and flesh. Although we must take in consideration of Wiesel witnessing his father’s death, he is aware that keeping silence is the optimal choice that wouldn’t exacerbate the situation, whereas my grandparents made the decision by themselves, to abandon their parents and friends with their own two feet. (though they weren’t aware that North and South would be completely divided)My grandparents have always regretted the decision they’ve made. They felt deep remorse in leaving their parents for their own good. My grandfather, for years, too k alcohol as a catharsis to his mental pains, and my grandmother would frequently break into tears by the tragic separation and the gnawing guilt at her premature decision. For the several decades of their life, they have been hoping to see their loved ones again through the many channels of communication including telephone, letters, the media or family visits that existed in the recent years. Unfortunately, they never reached in contact with them. Bearing in mind the threatens of the authority of its propaganda, the government in Pyongyang is preventing personal exchanges as much as it can, for they are unwilling to permit individuals from the estranged parts of the country to meet in person. For fifty years, they lived a life without hearing from their parents and relatives. My grandfather unfortunately passed away two years ago due to cancer, and his cemetery is located in the closest area to the border between North and South Korea. Luck is on Wiesel’s side for he can stay with his father in the labor camps, which definitely gives him a meaning to his life and thus he gains the hope, support and the reason to survive. If I were put in his shoes at the start of the novel, and had to make a choice between labor camps and abandoning parents, I would have chosen the former categorically.

Gods in Oedipus the King essays

Gods in Oedipus the King essays Many ancient Greek plays dealt with the interaction of humans with the immortal gods of Olympus. The Greeks believed in what they called fate and always associated their fate with the gods. It is easy to assume that some fates were more horrible and cruel than others. Also, people who seem to be good and just receive a punishment that might be too harsh. This belief can easily be applied to the play Oedipus the King by Sophocles. The gods seem to be unforgiving, unjust, and cruel. Some might believe this display is the complete nature of the gods. It could also be safe to argue that this type of universe is not a favorable one in which to live and thus many would question the righteousness of the gods and how they interact with man. Oedipus might be a victim of the fate set forth by the gods, however, the events that occur between the pages of Oedipus the King do not create an unbiased judgement of the nature of the gods. There are several important instances throughout the play that should be remembered when arriving at what the nature of the gods is. First, Oedipus, after being told by Creon that the death of King Laius was never investigated, delivered the punishment that meant for Laiuss slayer. I pray that the slayer wear his unblest life out evilly, as he is evil. And I pray may I suffer the same things which I have just called down upon others (Sophocles, 82-83). This statement entitles Oedipus to suffer the same punishment as the unknown slayer. Also, Oedipus said that Our health (with the gods help) shall be made certain or our ruin (Sophocles, 80). Oedipus wanted the help of the gods at the beginning. The nature of the gods is to answer such prayers, but not to force decisions onto the mortals. Oedipus continued to hound for answers even after Jocasta tried to persuade him to think otherwise. Why ask of whom he spoke? Do not regard it. It is futile are the words...

High Level Autistic Disorder

High Level Autistic Disorder Introduction High-level autistic disorder is an acute developmental disability that starts at birth or within a child’s early years of being. It is also known as Autism. It is the consequence of a neurological disorder that alters the functioning of the brain. This causes impediments or difficulties in many distinct skills from childhood to adulthood.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on High Level Autistic Disorder specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More High-level autistic disorder belongs to a group of developmental disabilities recognized as Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). A spectrum disorder is a collection of disorders with similar characteristics. In autism, while one individual may have minor symptoms, another one may have substantial ones. The diversity in the nature of the signs and when they will possibly begin appearing also makes autism to be recognized like an ASD (Mesibov, Shea Adams, 2001).   High-level autistic disorder is a worldwide disorder found amongst all tribal, cultural and socioeconomic groups. It is mostly found in children especially boys. However, autistic girls have more critical symptoms and greater cerebral impairment (Turkington Anan, 2007). This paper will discuss a case study of high-level autistic disorder. It involves Tommy, who is a 6-year-old nursery school student. His classroom behavior is quite different from that of the other students. He has poor academic performance. He is unable to comply with basic classroom rules and expectations. He has difficulties in performing expected academic tasks. Tommy’s father is a shy soft-spoken man while his mother appears bright and vivacious.  In a meeting with the principal, Tommy’s parents state that Tommy did not start talking until he was about 2 years of age. However, the father states that he still had the same problem though he turned out okay. His mother complains that Tommy has diff iculties while playing with other children. He does not share toys with the other children. She further adds that Tommy hits other children when angry and cries in a shrill, loud voice when he does not get his way. Tommy does not have real friends. The mother also reports that Tommy does not always respond to her voice when she calls. She also reports that Tommy needs a lot of coaching and supervision to get dressed in the morning. Tommy’s hand has to be held tightly when crossing the street since he sometimes darts into the street.Advertising Looking for research paper on health medicine? Let's see if we can help you! According to the teacher, Tommy cries and rocks back and forth when he has to change activities. He has severally hit other children who casual ly bump into him on the playground. All this symptoms show that Tommy is a victim of high-level autistic disorder. Discussion Genetic and Environmental Contributions to High Level Autistic Disorder Several environmental and genetic factors have set the stage for high-level autistic disorder. Genes play a key role in the development of this disorder. Different studies have indicated that twins who are identical have a higher likelihood to suffer from this condition than fraternal twins. In a household with one autistic baby, the probability of having another autistic baby is 5%. Family members of an autistic child may have minor social impairments including recurring behaviors’ and problems in communication. Abnormal genes also lead to high-level autistic disorder. The environment is another cause of high-level autistic disorder. Environmental pollutants such as insect repellents and heavy metals are significant risk factors. Lack of enough oxygen at birth and the presence of viruses in the environment may also lead to this disorder (Ryaskin, 2004). Symptoms of High Level Autistic Disorder Children with autism typically exhibit problems in social interaction. They also face difficulties in verbal and non-verbal contacts. This can be attributed to language delays. They tend to show interest in odd, recurring or constrained activities. They also have impaired intellectual capacities. Infants have problems in cuddling. They shun from eye contact and do not appear to be in need of affection. They shed tears when picked up. They form no connection with their parents and do not exhibit any concerns towards strangers. They do not train the ordinary games of babyhood. As children with a high-level autistic disorder grow old, they often have extra ordinary reactions to sensory experiences (Blanc Volkers, 2007). (DSM) IV Classification of High Level Autistic Disorder The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) IV classify high-level autistic disorder in to three. According to DSM-IV, autism is a qualitative destruction in social interaction and verbal communication. High-level autistic disorder is considered by DSM-IV as constrained, recurring and a stereotyped behavioral pattern (Rapoport Ismond, 1996).Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on High Level Autistic Disorder specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Brain monitoring techniques Brain scan involves the use of different techniques to picture the structure and functioning of the brain. Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) depends on the paramagnetic characteristics of hemoglobin. It enables one to see representations of fluctuating blood supply to the brain connected with neural cavity. This permits images to be created that show which brain parts are activated. PET (Positron Emission Tomography) detects brain receptors linked to neurotransmitters. It has the capability of detecting chemicals that attach to recep tors. Single Photon Emission Computed Photography (SPECT) utilizes gamma rays producing radioisotopes. A gamma camera is used, and a computer comes up with images of the active brain regions. Injection of a radioactive tracer is then done. This is quickly absorbed by the brain though not redistributed. SPECT reflects blood flow in the cerebrum. MEG (Magneto encephalography) is another non-invasive brain monitoring technique. It determines the magnetic fields generated by electrical actions in the brain (Zager, 2005). High Level Autistic Disorder Tests and Assessments Assessment of Verbal and Spatial memory (Differential Ability Scales subtests) The DAS (Differential Ability Scale) is a cognitive ability test for children aged between 2 and 17 years. It involves diagnostic tests for vocal and non-vocal matters. Verbal subtests involved in DAS are verbal comprehension, vocabulary naming and explanations of similarities between pictures. Spatial subtests involved in assessment of spati al memory include block building, copying of drawings and recalling of designs. It also involves construction of patterns and the identification of picture similarities (Oller John, 2009). Assessment of Verbal Fluency (Differential Ability Scales subtests) Verbal fluency is the capability to generate a sequence of words under theoretical or phonological demands. The DAS examines verbal fluency through word definitions whereby the victims explain the meaning of words spoken by the assessor. Word reading tests are also done to increase the children’s ability of reading more and more difficult words. Assessment of Social Cognition (Autism Diagnostic Observation Scale) This involves a sequence of planned and semi planned activities that entail social interaction between the assessor and the autistic child. The assessor observes and recognizes segments of the child’s behavior. He designates this to predetermined observational classifications. Classified observations are co nsequently combined to generate quantitative scores for evaluation. ADOS show social and verbal communication behaviors necessary for autism diagnosis (Barker, 2004).Advertising Looking for research paper on health medicine? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Assessment of Executive Function (NEPSY battery for high functioning Autistic Disorder Children) This is a neuropsychological assessment test. It evaluates neuropsychological development in autistic children aged between 3 and 16 years. It analyses both straightforward and complex features of cognition that are significant in children’s capability to learn and be industrious at home and in school. It tests cognitive features, which are not, ordinarily covered by the child’s general capacity or achievement batteries (Mesmere, 2008). Assessment of daily functioning â€Å"Vineland† This refers to the evaluation and monitoring of the daily activities of the child. It is an estimation of a child’s functional status. It involves activities performed usually such as feeding, dressing, bathing and leisure. Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales is a suitable test to measure a child’s level of daily functioning. It identifies and categorizes mental retardation w ith high-level autistic disorder. It is planned within a structure of three domains. These include verbal communication, social interactions and daily living. Vineland can be used to establish educational, recovery and cure programs for autistic children (Schopler Mesibov, 1988). Assessment of Intellectual Ability and Achievement The DAS possibly measures intellectual capacity better than many contending tests because the exceptional diagnostic tests are not involved in the verbal, non-vocal spatial and full scores (Doyle Iland, 2004). Assessment of Cognitive Speed It is an assessment method for approximating and forecasting the amount of functional harm amongst autistic victims. Child’s version of Trails A B is used together with DAS. The scores are associated with cognitive pointers of functional harm. In Trails A and B, the child links numbers in series followed by letters. He then relates the numbers to the letters in a sequence. Conclusion Early intervention in educat ional settings for a period of not less than two years leads to improved outcomes in most autistic children. It is important for pregnant mothers to avoid taking drugs unless prescribed by the doctor. This is because some instances of this disorder are related to exposure to chemicals in the course of pregnancy. Encouraging surroundings in the learning establishments, residence and the places of work assist autistic persons to continue developing all through their lives.  High-level autistic disorder has no cure. In some cases, the victims may gain speech. Signs of the disorder get mild with age. Factors such as having an intelligence quotient of more than 50, capacity to communicate before reaching 6 years and having a useful talent imply a better prognosis. Present prognosis for high-level autistic disorder has so much improved. Autistic children are put in institutions. Adult victims have the capacity to work victoriously in mainstream jobs. Such people, however, need moral sup port in their efforts for a self-reliant life. Many other victims of autism have the ability to work in exceptional environments under the supervision of managers. Such managers are skilled in dealing with the less fortunate in the society. It is, therefore, clear that the future holds something yummy for victims of high-level autistic disorder (Ozonoff Portland, 2002). References Barker, P. (2004). Basic child psychiatry. Explain The Relationship between money supply and inflation Essay

Explain The Relationship between money supply and inflation - Essay Example Since high inflation rate decreases the nominal value of money, demand for money decreases (Gafar 2003, p. 101; International Monetary Fund 1996, p. 106). This makes demand for money less sensitive to high inflation rate (Sussman and Zeira 2003). High inflation could impede the overall economic growth in UK. Each time UK is facing high inflation rate, it is expected that the real value of money decreases. At this point in time, abundant supply of money circulates in the entire UK economy. For this reason, the prices of local goods and services tend to increase. Since the nominal value of money decreases, interest rates and minimum wage requirements could increase (International Monetary Fund 1996, p. 101). In order to control the adverse economic effect of high inflation rate, monetary policy should be use in order to control the supply of money that circulates in UK. To allow the readers have a better understanding about this subject matter, this report will focus on discussing the relationship between money supply and inflation. After discussing the relationship between money supply and inflation, this report will discuss how increasing or decreasing the interest rate could affect the increase or decrease in money supply. Relationship between Money Supply and Inflation In general, central banks do not have a direct power to improve economic growth. Given that money supply has a significant role in the movements of inflation rate (Basco, D'Amato and Garegnani 2009), central banks control the money supply by manipulating the levels of short-term interest rates at the point wherein the central banks could control high inflation rate from increasing (Gafar 2003, p. 103). Specifically in the case of European Union, the European Central Bank (ECB) was made responsible in keeping the market prices of basic commodities stable by preventing inflationary growth (Hossain 2010). High inflation rate contributes to low economic growth as a result of increasing the interest rates and minimum wage requirements (Gafar 2003, p. 102). Since the market price of basic commodities is high at times when inflation rate is high, more people will have difficulty in purchasing basic commodities. Because of high minimum wage requirements, more local businesses will not be able to sustain its daily operational costs in times when sales are down (Laing, Li and Wang 2007). To avoid bankruptcy, a large number of the local businesses are likely to cut down the number of its employees. In the end, this increases the unemployment rate. Monetary equation assumes that a significant increase in the supply of money could result to a significant increase in price provided that velocity and Y are constant [MV = PY]. In line with this, several studies revealed that the velocity of money is highly correlated with growth in money supply under high inflation and vice versa (Basco, D'Amato and Garegnani 2009; Dwyer and Fisher 2009). As part of controlling the money supply, ECB repo rted that it is necessary to maintain the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) â€Å"below but close to 2% inflation rate† (ECB 2007b; ECB 2003). Maintaining inflation rate close or below 2% inflation rate is necessary to ensure that the EU economy will benefit from stable market prices. Likewise, keeping the inflation rate below or close to 2% inflation rate could protect the EU economy from the risk of having
