Effect of Air Bags on Child Fatalities

Impact of Air Bags on Child Fatalities Diagram of the investigation Proof after the proposals for age-fitting restrictions just as harsh seat areas for kids going in the engine vehicles has been fine settled. However, proof for the age-based proposals viewing air sacks just as children is deficient. Despite the fact that the NHTSA strategy for kids just as air sacks have been coursed widely, the age (or body size) that best portray when a childs extra risk of the injury or demise from an air pack is supplanted by advantage is obscure. Two introductory examinations recommended a connection between air packs just as youth fatalities (characterizing kids as 0-12 years just as 0-9 years of the age), however the two investigations were constrained by moderately little quantities of the fatalities, yielding factually uncertain outcomes. Ensuing examinations characterized kids as 12 years of the age just as gave progressively decisive proof to the connection between air packs just as death among right front seat travelers inside this age extend. Allison (20 01) recommended that the expanded mortality threat from air sacks was generally articulated among right front seat travelers through age 10, getting less articulated from 11 to 14 years just as going to a net advantage for travelers 15 years of the age, however the outcomes didn't arrive at measurable centrality. A later report inspecting contrasts noticeable all around pack viability as per age just as restriction utilize recommended a net increment in the peril of the demise among kid travelers 12 years of the age, yet test size impediments forestalled authoritative proclamations with respect to the youth age at net risk may change with no impact (or advantage) just as the investigation didn't survey markers of the body size. Durbin et al showed that the risk of the injury (as opposed to death) among limited children 3 to 15 years of the age presented to traveler air-pack sending was twice that among front-situated children not presented to an air sack, with the threat of the inju ry being generally steady among kids 3 to 8, 9 to 12, just as 13 to 15 years of the age. We guessed that particular cut-off focuses in the age, tallness, just as/or weight among kids used to characterize when the peril of the genuine injury from the nearness of a traveler air-sack changes from unsafe with no impact (or gainful), after alteration for crash seriousness just as other significant accident factors. We tried this theory with age, stature, just as weight as impact modifiers (cooperation terms) of the connection between the nearness of a traveler air pack just as genuine injury among right front seat travelers 0 to 18 years of the age that is engaged with the engine vehicle crashes (MVCs). Section Two: Literature Review The Politics of the Air Bag Safety: A Competition among Problem Definitions Considering the 121 passings credited to the air pack arrangements, impressively to kids just as grown-ups of the little height, ongoing approach banter has intentional on adjusting present Federal car air sack guidelines. A difficult definition perspective is utilize to recognize the idea of this discussion. (Computer based intelligence Norton 2003) Utilizing a substance investigation of the official record of the one U.S. House just as two U. S. Senate hearings, it is fight that four issue definitions epitomize the discussion over air pack security: conduct, administrative, innovative, just as corporate voracity. (Allison 2001)Furthermore, it is contended that an issue definition point of view offers a superior delineation of the ongoing changes to Federal air pack guidelines than do pluralist, elitist, just as head operator models. (Relationship for the Advancement Automotive Medicine 2001) Political conversation on approach issues are every now and again depicted as a contradiction over contending meanings of the social condition. (More valiant Ferguson 1997)A issue definition offers the casing through that current conditions should be in the contention with prized social qualities. Along these lines, strategy issues are socially developed just as imparted through the verbalization of the mutual definitions. (More courageous, Whitfield Ferguson 1997) Issue definitions are noteworthy to arrangement hypothesis in the two different ways. In the first place, they pressure that issues ascend to the open plan. Definitions conveys an edge through that social conditions are seen to be tricky just as in the need of the administration activity. (More valiant Whitfield 1998) Thus, the issues that are effectively considered by government authorities are in the part shown by the accomplishment of the definition vieing for consideration on a jam-packed plan. (Barnard 1997) Farther than enlightenment that worry is on the open plan, the issue definition perspective additionally can help with delineating the result of the arrangement procedure. As political exchange, the reason for the difficult definition is without a moment's delay to offer specifics, to clarify, to advocate, just as to persuade.(Berg 2000) Actors take an interest to have their meaning of the social state outline the idea of the arrangement conversation. (Cummings 2001) A difficult definition frees the endurance from the open issue just as the causes that it exists. The helpfulness of the particular arrangement sensibly spills out of the upheld set of the causes. Thusly, strategy business people use issue definitions to tighten the assortment of the choices viable just as to embrace a specific arrangement. (Calvert McCubbins 1989) Along these lines, issue definition is regularly at the core of the activity itself, contends Allison (2001). A lot of policymaking, in the reality, is distracted with whose definition would win (p. 98). Researchers have perceived a scope of the qualities that help to represent the utility of the definition for organizing strategy banter. In the hands of the practiced arrangement business visionary, a difficult definition, has potential arrangements, just as is all around coordinated with different definitions is a compelling apparatus for impacting strategy development. However, this situation of the difficult definitions still can't seem to be totally investigated. (Cobb 1983) The worry of the air pack security offers a chance to take a gander at the job of the issue definitions in the arrangement method just as to test recommendations certain in the past research. Passings that have been certify to air pack arrangements have deliberate consideration on the perils connected with air sacks just as have brought about the test to the intelligence of the Federal guideline require that they be fixed in the engine vehicles. (Corneli 2000) various issue definitions have risen in the discussion in the push to impact Federal strategy. What are the instruments of the total issue definition? What clarifications are being utilized by strategy business visionaries to convince the substance of the administration set of laws on air sacks? Those definitions have been the best in the forming new arrangement? Those definitions are probably going to shape arrangement later on? To manage these inquiries we do a substance examination of the administrator record of the three congressional hearings (two Senate, one House) hung on the topic of the air sack wellbeing during 1996 just as 1997. (Damsgaard 2001) The official proclamations just as verbal comments of the every benefactor in the hearings were inspected for the way that the substance portrayed (encircled) the issue of the air sack security. Additionally, present standards spread by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) offer out as the arrangement response to this worry. (Allison 2001) To test speculations about the impact of the issue definitions o n approach detailing, the substance of NHTSA rules will be contrasted and the prevailing issue definitions explained in the discussion as did in the congressional hearings. (Coughlin 1994) Parts of the Problem Definitions Complete issue definitions have a few key parts. To begin with, definitions perceive a cultural express that should be cured through government act. (Dahl 1967)Second, key insights just as depictions of the applicable occasions are offered as proof to observationally show the apparent condition. In offering explicit observational proof a difficult definition causes to notice certain parts of the condition while deliberately disregarding others. This proof likewise has the impact of the exhibiting that the condition being portrayed isn't a detached occasion. (Dahl 1982)The definition gives an edge through that the data is deciphered just as may prompt a totally different translation of the information gathered from an alternate issue definition. Third, the reasons for this condition are distinguished to assign fault or give a representation. It is this open causal hypothesis which habitually recognizes various definitions. Fourth, a total definition frees a set from the outcomes that would answer the alleged condition. (Damsgaard 2001) The arrangements that are embraced sensibly follow from the enunciated causal hypothesis. Fifth, understood in the rested arrangements is an acknowledgment of the key qualities or an ideal end state. These qualities show what the condition ought to resemble in the general public. They likewise give regulating defense to the enunciated causal hypothesis just as arrangements. 6th, to convey to life these qualities, images are utilized to play out the social condition that should be addressed. Images are substance that is skilled with significance that isn't inbuilt in the element itself that people use to summarize, gather, just as rearrange complex wonders. (Decker 1984) Symbols not just assistance to banter other than it likewise constructs understanding for a particular point of view. Business visionaries use images to convince others to acknowledge the fundamental presumptions of the difficult definition. As Braver (1997) recommends, emblematic portrayal is the substance of the iss ue definition in the governmental issues (p. 137). Air Bag Safety

Corporate social responsibility (with an example) Research Paper

Corporate social obligation (with a model) - Research Paper Example It isn't on the whole correct to state that Corporations are avoided from social orders; they are a piece of it and thus have a task to carry out inside in the general public circle. In Worlds tropical areas like South Africa and North India, there have been irresistible ailment spreading, similar to jungle fever and leishmaniasis for which there is no fix given due to high destitution and less restitutions to the pharmaceuticals (Hirsch, 2008). On the opposite side, there are no solutions for constant maladies (tuberculosis) as pharmaceuticals have overlooked the ethical duty and have organized rich achievements than culture. As indicated by Lynn Payer (creator of Disease-Mongers, 1 992) medication industry has been predominant because of a few reasons, one of the primary explanation is sickness mongering, an idea that severely pulverizes the thought of corporate social obligation (Dossey, 2010). The Multi Store Model And The Working Memory Model

Memory is our ability to encode, store, retain and subsequently recall information and past experiences in the human brain (Luke Mastin,2010). In this review I am going to focus on the multi store model and the working memory model, which explain in detail how memory works. The multi-store model (MSM) of memory by Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968), explains that the memory is made up of three different stores. These are: sensory memory (SM), short term memory(STM) and long term memory(LTM). This model explains how each store works in terms of encoding, duration and capacity. The SM obtains the information from environmental stimuli through our five senses which are touch, sight, smell, taste and sound. In SM the encoding is either visual, auditory or haptic; duration is  ¼ to  ½ seconds and the capacity is all sensory experience(McLeod S.A,2007). Attention is essential for the information to transfer to the STM, otherwise it is lost through decay. The information in the STM is mostly encoded acoustically. The diagram below shows us how the information is transferred from one store to another. According to Miller s Magic number 7 (1956) most adults can store from 5 to 9 items, therefore STM is known to have a capacity of 7+/-2 items and a duration of up to 18 seconds. The information in this store can be lost through displacement which is replacing the old information with new ones or forgetting it (decay). There are two types of rehearsals. Maintenance rehearsal is not effectiveShow MoreRelatedEvaluate two models of one cognitive process1042 Words   |  5 Pagestwo models of one cognitive process This essay will be discussing one particular cognitive process: the memory by evaluating two models, which are the Multi store model introduced by Atkinson and Shiffrin in 1968 and the Working memory model by Baddeley and Hitch in 1974. Following the Multi-Store Model, it is believed that STM holds limited amounts of information for short periods of time with relatively little processing, it is believed to be a unitary store. This means that due to its single store it has no subsystems, unlike the Working Memory Model which has many subsystems. This proves that the Working Memory is not a unitary store. Working Memory is STM. Its importance is increasing as a large number of industrial and technological communities are rapidly adopting it. The benefits such as low cost and convenience of cloud computing services have significantly changed our day to days activities, however, there are numerous security issues facing cloud computing making it difficult to maintain data security and privacy, support data and service availability and†¦show more content†¦Flooding attacks are also performed by hackers where they send numerous bogus offers and request for help to a target machine rendering services blocked from users trying to access them. The two types of attacks that would result from flooding attack in cloud include direct DoS and indirect DoS. When a cloud server receives a large volume of flooded requests, it will provide more computational resources to cope with the malicious requests. The server then exhausts its full capability and a direct DoS is occurred to all requests from users. However, the flood attack could possibly cause indirect DoS to other servers in the same cloud when the servers share the wor kload of the targeted server, which results a full lack of availability on all of the services. Cloud Security Attacks Web-based applications enable users to access application servers via web pages of web browsers. Wrapping attacks and malware injection attack is one of the various web-based attacks where an attacker exploits the vulnerabilities in a web application and attach malicious codes into it resulting to a variation in its proper execution. Cloud computing systems are also susceptible to malware injection attacks. Measurement Risk Management and Control †Free Samples to Students

Question: Discuss about the Measurement Risk Management and Control. Answer: Introduction Risk administration is a device to recognize opportunity and threat afterward break down the identified items to give appropriate ranking, then the mitigation need to be considered on the basis of positions. This information regarding project administration manages the opportunity and threat and plan in like manner with the goal that it doesn't let affect any of the three limitations of the project[1]. SFSU (Silicon Forest State University) has many information system related activities which are being overseen by the OIT (Office of Information Technology) department. The users at back end of OIT utilized 'Request Tracker' for conveying and following the ticketing framework in light of UNIX, while the users at front end were utilizing Remedy framework for creating and following ticketing framework which is being used for monitoring and tracking the bugs. For any sort of demand to users of back end, the users of front end need to physically sort the issue to 'Request Tracker' and this agony stayed for around three years. Yet, now the office chose to change the software being used by the users of front end to 'Request Tracker' and gave the assignment to Ron Bashley to lead the project with the group of Harry Bonnett, but both of them report to two different officers. Opportunity and threats in any task are directed on the prelude of the methods depicted in the risk administration. The activities which fuse into the arranging of risk organization configuration are identified, analyze and rank them[2]. Then accordingly Mitigation and Monitoring risk all through the undertaking life cycle. The opportunities and threats can be of many sorts, and fit for influencing cost, design and quality, specific, legitimately authoritative, obtaining, methodologies etc. A complete purpose of the risk plan is to set the action prepare for all the recognized risks particularly at a range by saying rank low or high. There are distinctive sorts of threats easing strategies or steps which ought to be taken in the wake of positioning all the recognized opportunities and threats. There can be many action plans to mitigate the risk like transferring it, sharing it with any outsider, avoiding it totally or accepting the threats and in case of opportunity, it should be exp lored more. Risk and Opportunity Identification Risk No. 1. Identified on August 27, 2017 by Pike Gresham: there is risk of having cost overrun due to the constraints in the budget made during the financial year Risk No. 2. Identified on August 29, 2017 by Ron Bashley: due to same organizational level of himself and Harry, there can be communication gap during the project execution phase Opportunity No. 1. Identified on September 1, 2017 by Baken Dryhed: because of the already availability of the software with the users of back end the implementation must not take more than a month and help in minimizing the gap Serial No. Description and Cause Likelihood Impact Risk No. 1 There is risk of having cost overrun due to the constraints in the budget made during the financial year High High Risk No. 2 Due to same organizational level of Ron and Harry, there can be communication gap during the project execution phase Low High Opportunity No. 1 Because of the already availability of the software with the users of back end the implementation must not take more than a month and help in minimizing the gap Low Low Risk and Opportunity responses Risk No. 1: since the rank is high and the issue cannot be avoided, so we can plan for its mitigation by having some additional cash reserve as management reserve to counter the miss happening. Risk No. 2: the threat of getting the communication gap causing impact on the project is medium, so it should also be addressed properly by conducting more and more review meetings as per the need of the time. Opportunity No. 1: need to be explored to its maximum extent, so that the project can be finished sooner by assigning more resources. Monitoring and Controlling Risk and Opportunity After executing all the steps of risk and opportunity identifications, analysis and ranking the list must be maintained in the updated risk register. The register must be maintained dynamic by introducing many more risks or opportunities which can be identified during the course of the project being handled by OIT department[4]. Like we performed earlier steps, any more dangers which are distinguished by any of the partners must be examined and given rank accordingly. Along these lines the risks and opportunities must be cross checked all through the project tenure. It can be supported that the identification, analysis and monitoring of the risks and opportunities of OIT project is an absolute necessity prerequisite for any project administration action. In addition once the mitigation design of the considerable number of risks and opportunities are done, they should be checked routinely and register should be refreshed in like manner for controlling the triple limitations of the task. Conclusion So now it can be concluded finally that the project conceived by OIT need to be tracked very cautiously and moreover the cash flow to avoid any kind of overrun, because any overrun can stop the project immediately due to unavailability of excess fund. For maintaining all above constraints, risks and opportunities are required to be assessed and managed properly. References The MITRE Corporation. (2017) Risk Management Approach and Plan. What Are The Laws Of Directors Remuneration In Australia Are They Research Paper

What Are The Laws Of Directors Remuneration In Australia Are They Adequate, Effective And Efficient To Protect The Interests Of The Shareholders - Research Paper Example It is simply regarded as the salary of the directors that is paid by a particular company to the director. A director is viewed to be an administrative officer of a business entity and acts as a principal agent of a concern. The remuneration of the directors is not only provided in the form of salary but also in the form of bonuses, incentives and stock payments and other benefits. Different laws are applicable concerning director’s remuneration in diverse nations. It has been viewed that the remuneration reforms which formed by the Federal government of Australia attracted the response of various organizations as well as their respective directors and also made them to respond to make any sort of change in stakeholder engagement. However, the shareholders and the constitution frames by a company play a major part in determining the laws of director’s remuneration in Australia.1 In this discussion, the different laws concerning director’s remuneration in Australia will be taken into concern. Moreover, the laws are adequate, effective and efficient or not in order to protect the interests of the shareholders will also be portrayed in the discussion. Legal Issues Relevant To the Laws of Directors’ Remuneration in Australia The legal issues relevant to the laws of director’s remuneration in Australia can be processed under the recognition of Chartered Secretaries Australia (CSA). It has been apparently observed that the issue relating to directors remuneration received much attention in the year 2011. In this similar regard, this regulatory reform issue ranked third in the year 2012.2 Section 9 of the Corporations Act defines remuneration as any benefit that is provided to an employee or an officer belonging to a particular corporation. Moreover, the Act also described remuneration as compensation that comprises all employee benefits such as salaries, bonuses and wages among others. According to Chartered Secretaries Australia (20 09), the Australian Government newly released the Corporations Amendment Bill 2009 for public consultation. Under the guidelines of this law, it has been proposed that the termination benefits especially for the directors as well as the senior management officials will need approval from the shareholders. This practice would ultimately ensure higher remuneration scrutiny that includes greater responsibility and termination payments.1 The different legal issues that can be correlated with the laws of director’s remuneration in Australia are the ‘two-strikes’ rule, proxy voting, no vacancy rule, remuneration consultants and voting by key management personnel.3 The detailed analysis of the aforementioned issues has been described hereunder. The ‘Two-Strikes’ Rule According to the Corporations Act 2001, every listed company is required to make a remuneration report that should be submitted to a non- binding vote of shareholders at the Annual General Meet ing (AGM) of a company. The Act proposes to empower this requirement by forming ‘two strikes’ and re-election procedure. In this connection, the first strike would take place at the time when remuneration report of a company receives a ‘no’ vote of near about 25% or more. If certain situation arises, then it is the responsibility of the management officials of a company to convey the matter related to the board in order to take necessary steps or action. If a company does not convey any message relating to the matter, then the board would be liable to take necessary actions. The second strike would happen when the remuneration repo

SMART criteria Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

SMART criteria - Essay Example The motion detectors shall be installed to sense whenever there seems to be activity in the room. This will avoid instances of switching on light in an empty room. Whenever there is motion in the room the switching system shall be in standby mode. Light detectors shall then be engaged when the level of light reduces which shall turn the lights on. Motion detectors shall be the primary switching control to put the switching system on standby mode. The motion detector shall be installed by using laser technology to enable sensory of even the smallest movements within a room (Fraden, 267). The light detectors will be the secondary switching level turning on the lights when low levels of light are detected in the occupied room. Measurability The progress of the project shall be based on the set timetable for the plan. Each step in the installation of the switching system shall be analyzed before going forward to the next step. The first step has been laid down as wiring the house. This w ill be done to ensure the circuit is well placed and in the desirable manner. This step is expected to consume the most time as it involves a lot of physical work. The goals of the plan shall be measured against the time laid down for the expected progress. The installation of the circuit should adhere to the installation standards (Linsley, 144). These include the wiring safety codes and the color codes used internationally. Other national standards shall also be applied in measuring the suitability of the installation of the systems. Comparing the setting of the switching system with the set standards shall provide a platform for measuring the conformity to standards. This will ensure that the end product not only works perfectly, but is also safe and conforms to set standards. Attainability The need to install the switching system arises from the desire to switch off unnecessary light. The aim of installing this new system will be to ensuring regulation in the amount of wasted en ergy. Providing a proper control to the usage of light shall immensely reduce the costs incurred from energy related bills. Evidence exists to show that this method can be able to save up to 25% of the energy consumption, reducing energy costs by a similar margin (Klaus D. John, 97). This regulation will occur by providing a system that allows for usage of light only when necessary. The number of lights left on overnight shall also be minimized by using this system. If an individual leaves a room without switching the lights off, the timer shall automatically switch the lights off. This occurs after motion detectors fail to detect any activity in the room. Excess lighting in the rooms shall also be reduced by the light sensors as they control the amount of light allowed into a room at any time. Realistic The proposed system provides an avenue for saving a lot of energy costs. This shall translate into reduced energy bills for the house. The installation of this system is viable as a way of relieving the owners of the house from the high costs of electricity and lighting. Achievement of this shall be through efficient management of the lighting by using switching system that is automated (Reed, 245). The system continues to be employed in many establishments like hotels, and desirable outcomes have been realized. If the same system is utilized within the scope of this house, similar results can also be realized. This lighting system can immensely reduce the time taken by people moving round to switch lights in places

Defining Race and Ethnicity Essay Example for Free

Defining Race and Ethnicity Essay Whether this definition is accurate or not, this is what the terms â€Å"race† and â€Å"ethnicity† mean to me: Race is a term that describes a group of people with similar descent. I believe race is determined physical specifications such as color, language, eye shape, or even things such as blood types. Human beings as a whole are described as the â€Å"human race;† I believe this to be an accurate definition as human beings (despite color, language, or any other physical characteristics) are all the same. Genetically speaking, we are all made up of the same â€Å"parts.† The term â€Å"race† is an all-encompassing statement used to define a large group, overall. Ethnicity defines the background of a particular person or thing. This term encompasses many backgrounds and associations. Foods can be â€Å"ethnic† if they originate or are commonly consumed in a specific country or region. The same applies to human beings. One’s ethnicity may be determined by his or her birthplace, religion, of beliefs. Ethnicity does not define physical characteristics, but rather backgrounds and traits. The United States is a melting pot. This country is made up of thousands and thousands of different people from different places. The USA is home to many ethnic backgrounds; however, the population (in my opinion) is a single â€Å"race.† We are all humans, as I have previously stated. Although our ethnic backgrounds may differ in many different ways, all in all, we are one race. This is important to bear in mind. Heritage should always be recognized, as it typically is in the United States. But acknowledging the vast backgrounds that exist in this country is the most important concept of all.

Graduation Speech -- Graduation Speech, Commencement Address

Dreams. The dictionary's definition of a dream is "To have great ambition or to really hope for something". Well, I say make those ambitions a reality and hope active. Robert Ballards Lifelong dream was to find the Titanic. For 13 years the dream of finding her dominated his life. In 1985 his 13 year quest ended when he discovered the muddy hulk of the H.M.S. Titanic. What is your quest? Do you have a "lifelong dream"? Is there anything :dominating your life" enough to hold your attention for 13 years? Without a dream, life is quickly reduced to bleak black and wimpy white, a diet too bland to get anybody out of bed in the morning. Dreams fuel our fire. The shortest route to ineffectiveness is to start running scared, think about every possible peril, take on chances, expect the wo...

Logistics department Essay

1. What interactions and discussion need to take place among the marketing, manufacturing, logistics, and finance departments? Explain the logistics department`s role in the introduction of the new product. The functional areas of marketing, logistics, manufacturing and finance should hold weekly sales and operations planning (S&OP) meetings to address the following: Identify firm planned orders which may be delayed to the customer. Notify key account managers and focused operations planning team(s) to expedite orders in jeopardy Address any resource constraints to meet firm planned orders for the current month and planned orders for the following three months (manufacturing capacity, labor) The focused operations planning team(s) which consists of production, procurement, manufacturing and master production scheduling (logistics) must meet daily to ensure the requirements identified in the S&OP meeting are carried out. Logistics ensures the following: – ensure that raw material inputs to peanuts arrive on time without freight damage – ensure that finished goods inventory from the manufacturing facility to the warehouse, distribution center and eventually the customer arrive on time- in full without freight damage – minimize transportation costs by utilizing full truck load (FTL shipments) and in certain instances, intermodal (rail) shipments for cross country transport 2. Why is it necessary for the logistics department to be cognizant of all the details (quality, timing) of the new product introduction? Discuss the issues that might arise (e.g. the drop in demand after the Final Four) and what responsibilities the logistics department would have as a result of these changes. This necessity comes out of the need to have the right quantity at the right time in the right place to meet customer demand. Without this close  coordination between timing and quantity, deliveries would be delayed, inventory carrying costs would increase and as a result profits would be negatively impacted. In situations where the demand drops after the Final Four, the production planning and scheduling aspect comes into play. By utilizing a master production schedule which is closely aligned with S&OP meetings, the master production scheduler can adjust the production amounts to meet decreasing demand. This ensures that product produced is delivered to the customer and does not sit in the warehouse of Pete’s. To summarize, the logistics department is responsible for reacting to market/demand changes to maintain profit margins for the business.

J.D. Salinger Jerome David Salinger, one of the most influential authors to arise after World War II, was born on January 1, 1919 in New York City. Little is known about his early life except for his education. After flunking out of several prep schools, including McBurney’s, his parents sent him to Valley Forge Military Academy. People reverted back to traditional values and morals, and the individual began to less en in social value, as â€Å"blending in† became the norm. Also, beginning at this time was the Cold War, and its aura of despair and paranoia. The term Cold War Concern describes America’s growing worries about their safety and the effectiveness of their education system. Publication of The Catcher, a novel about a socially awkward 16 year old boy who quits school and goes on a three day adventure of self-discovery involving sex, drinking, and cuss words, in 1951 could not have met a more unaccepting audience. Holden’s anti-establishment and crass attitude was directly opposed to the values that had developed in America. In addition, the baby boom generation was growing up, and developing a rebellious attitude that mirrored that of Holden Caulfield. Conservative parents everywhere were shocked and repulsed, and the book was made subject of several censorship campaigns. Salinger became a star in what became known as the post-modernist period in art. Almost all of Salinger’s works portray a few crucial central elements and themes.
